Even with the passing of two music legends this week, the show went on in Las Vegas for the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, honoring music’s biggest chart toppers of today.

And when the likes of Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Katy Perry are all in attendance, you just know it’s going to be a great show.

Best Opening Act: LMFAO kicked off the show with a performance of their hit song “Party Rock Anthem” to get the crowd excited and into full “shuffling” mode. A dancing zebra also joined the band on stage to spice things up.

Worst Strip Tease: The men of LMFAO stripped down into smiley-face clad underwear and broke out into sexually-suggestive dance moves onstage. Hmmm…perhaps they were trying to give the men of Magic Mike a run for their money?

Best Hosts Ever: Hosts Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell brought the laughs to Las Vegas when they poked fun at their Rock and Roll cred. “We are extremely white and somewhat suburban. Rock and roll!” exclaimed the Modern Family dad.

Worst First Award: Justin Bieber took home the award for best social artist for the second consecutive year. Love the Biebs, but we can’t help but wish a bigger surprise kicked off the awards for the night!

Best Date: Recently divorced Katy Perry brought her grandmother as her date to the event. “I can’t wait to go and do shots with you after this,” Perry joked as she accepted her Spotlight Award onstage.  

Not Our Favorite Song Premiere: We adore Kelly Clarkson, and of course, her performance was stellar, but we can’t help but wish the American Idol winner would have sang her upbeat hit “Stronger.” Instead, the singer opted for a somber tune, choosing to debut her song “Dark Side” in a stunning red full-length gown.

Best Boy Band Smiles: The Wanted sang their hit song “I’m Glad You Came” and hit the stage with smiles. The five members of the sexy English boy band looked absolutely thrilled to be performing.

Worst Outfit Choice: Miley Cyrus presented the award for Best New Artist donning a white tuxedo jacket and…nothing else. Although the star hit a home run in the hair and makeup department, we were less than impressed with her outfit—apparently, pants were optional this year.

Best Shocking Performance: Chris Brown killed it on stage singing his hit song “Turn Up the Music.” We may have not been impressed by the Chris Brown Grammy love fest, but the slick dance moves, bikers and an epic light show made the performance one of the night’s most entertaining.

Worst Commercial Timing: Natasha Beddingfield sang a beautiful rendition of Donna Summer‘s hit “Last Dance,” or so we think—the performance was quickly cut off by a commercial break. Biggest bummer of the night?

Best Woman of the Year: Holy Taylor Swift! The singer rocked straight hair and a stunning red dress as she accepted the award for Woman of the Year. Zooey Deschanel introduced the country crooner and admired hte 22-year-old’s many accomplishments.

And On To Bieber Fever: Justin Bieber brought some serious swag to the stage, performing his hit song “Boyfriend.” We couldn’t help but swoon and feel like Selena Gomez is one of the luckiest GFs around.

Worst Bieber Follow-up: The Biebs protégé Carly Rae Jepsen performed her hit song “Call Me Maybe” immediately after Justin left the stage. The singer looked adorable in her sparkly green top, but her routine felt a little dull in comparison to J.Bieb’s epic takeover.

Best Ode to Las Vegas: Leave it to Ty and Julie to keep the laugh’s coming—cardboard cutouts of the Modern Family couple “toured” Vegas in a hilarious video. Boy, do we love these two!

Best Wind Blown Performance: Carrie Underwood looked absolutely stunning in a long red gown (trend alert?) as she belted out her hit “Blown Away” as mechanical fans made for a perfectly on-point performance.

Worst Ego Boast: Chris Brown took home the award for top R&B artist. There’s no denying the dude is deserving, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it, right?

Best Song Debut: Katy Perry floated across the stage as she debuted her new song “Wide Awake” while suspended from the ceiling. The usually upbeat singer showed off her softer side and looked absolutely angelic onstage.

Best Moment of the Night: John Legend and Jordin Sparks paid tribute to Whitney Houston, as Sparks gave a beautiful rendition of Houston’s hit “I Will Always Love You.”

Most Touching Speech: “Thank you so much for showing that much love. Because she deserved it…There will never be another one, ever,” Bobbi Kristina said as she accepted the Millenium award on her mother’s behalf. 

Best Ending Moments: The final half hour of the show didn’t disappoint with stellar performances by both CeeLo Green and Nelly Furtado. What a performance-filled night!

Best Duet: Alicia Keys presented Stevie Wonder with the Billboard Icon Award and paid tribute to the singer before the twosome took over the stage for a soulful duet. Wonder’s performance of his hit “Superstitious” made for an epic ending to the memorable evening!
