L.A. County Sheriff’s Department

Berndt is accused of feeding his semen to schoolchildren.

​It’s hard to imagine child-molester charges more horrific than those pinned on ex-Miramonte Elementary School teacher Mark Berndt, 63, yesterday.

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Special Victims Bureau arrested the teacher, who had been at the school for over 30 years, for binding and gagging at least 23 third-graders. He allegedly let cockroaches crawl on their faces and spoon-fed them his own semen. Investigators say they confiscated over 400 photos of the in-class “sex game,” which they believe recurred over a two-year period (from 2008 to 2010).

This was clearly one of the most sickening abuses of power ever to go unchecked in an American classroom. Yet the amount of time it took to put Berndt behind bars…

… even after officials had seen some of the photos, is near incomprehensible.

LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy told reporters this morning that Berndt was banned from campus as soon as a Redondo Beach film processor turned the photos over to local law enforcement. (And what a stroke of luck, in this digital age, that Berndt made the self-sabotaging decision to develop his kiddie porn the old-fashioned way.)

Still, Berndt wasn’t officially fired until March — likely thanks to an unbreakable United Teachers Los Angeles union contract. The same contract that allows “lemons” like Berndt (though he’s obviously a lot more than that) to keep their jobs for eternity, no matter their performance. According to a 2009 teacher-effectiveness rating by the LA Times, Berndt was seriously lagging in math, and his students scored below average in English progress, as well.

​Then there’s the obvious fact that no one was watching him. Superintendent Deasy told the press this morning that anyone walking past Berndt’s classroom would be able to see right in. And Sheriff’s Lieutenant Carlos Marquez says that “during the lunch breaks or recess, he’d go out to the playground and entice [students] back to the classroom.”

So where was Principal Martin Sandoval during all this? (A secretary at Miramonte tells us to “call back tomorrow morning,” as Sandoval is “in a meeting right now.”) Was no one talking to the kids about what they did in class all day?

The students at Miramonte Elementary have been betrayed by the district and the state. Their campus has been left behind to rot, academically: It ranks in the bottom 20 percent of California schools with similar demographics (almost entirely Latino) and in the bottom 10 percent overall.

It shouldn’t take the rampant under-supervision of a twisted old dud like Berndt for us to realize that teachers being held accountable is a make-or-break situation for vulnerable youth.

Which brings us to Outrage No. 2:

The Sheriff’s Department let Berndt roam free for over a year before he was arrested and placed under $ 2.3 million bail.

During this time, a longtime neighbor of Berndt’s tells the Los Angeles Times that he saw the accused child molester riding his bike with a young girl in Hermosa Beach, as recently as a month ago:

Berndt seemed unnerved when [neighbor John McManus] spotted him, the neighbor said, and later told him: “Don’t tell my sister I was with this young girl.”

The neighbor said Berndt told him the girl was one of his students and that they had ridden the bicycle nearly as far as Marina del Rey and back.

He said he frequently saw Berndt hanging out around the Redondo Beach pier, drinking beer and gawking at girls.

Lieutenant Marquez argues, today, that investigators were “monitoring” the ex-teacher in the months after he was fired, and that any immediate danger was mitigated by the school board’s decision to kick Berndt off campus. He tells KNX news radio that the Sheriff’s Department wanted to gather all possible evidence before making an arrest. For instance, DNA testing on the semen-covered spoon was only completed about “a month and a half ago.” From the Associated Press:

Authorities could have arrested Berndt on misdemeanor charges when the investigation began but chose to build a stronger felony case, Marquez said. He could get a life sentence if he is convicted.

Berndt, who has no previous arrest record, was placed under surveillance and is not believed to have had contact with children during the investigation. The childless bachelor lives a few blocks from two parks and an elementary school.

Jesus Christ. Why couldn’t they lock him up in the meantime, while they built the case? If the 40 initial “sex game” photos were damning enough to warrant Berndt’s immediate termination, no prosecutor in his or her right mind could turn such hideous evidence away cold-turkey.

LAUSD’s decision not to notify parents of the monster in their midst is similarly mind-boggling. Marquez tells the AP that investigators are looking for more victims, and are advising STD testing for some of the students — medical and emotional baggage they could have been carrying around for an entire year.

We’ve contacted various legal experts for some insight into how it’s even possible for LAUSD and L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca’s department to have dropped the ball this hard.

Uninsured, poor immigrants can walk into a health clinic or hospital in the state and get publicly subsidized care at virtually no cost to them, regardless of their immigration status.The program, widely supported in Massachusetts, drew little attention when Romney signed the trailblazing healthcare law. But now it could prove problematic for the Republican presidential hopeful, who has been attacking Texas Gov. Rick Perry for supporting educational aid for children of undocumented immigrants in Texas.

“We have to turn off the magnet of extraordinary government benefits,” Romney said at the recent Fox News-Google debate in Florida.

Perry has defended the Texas program, saying it is better to educate young people, even if they are in the country illegally, to help them become productive members of society.

Similarly, supporters of the Massachusetts program note there are ultimately higher costs for denying care to sick patients regardless of their immigration status.

The Massachusetts program, which cost more than $ 400 million last year, paid for 1.1 million hospital and clinic visits. It’s unclear how many undocumented patients benefited because the state does not record that data.

It’s amazing.  Sometimes the word “free” can cause people to gather in droves despite torrential rains, stand in line for 12 hours, drive for miles in a snow storm, or leave their 90 year-old mothers home alone in the middle of a power outage.  All for the sake of some “free” product that promises to make their lives change dramatically – usually overnight.  At other times, the word “free” can give the impression of inferior quality products or services.  For instance, free diet forums online are a very good example.  People pay thousands of dollars per year for some of the most expensive online diet plans, like the Zone Diet, South Beach Diet, Jenny Craig, and Weight Watchers.  But there are many free online diet plans that can help people achieve their weight loss goals.  Why opt to pay thousands of dollars for an online diet, when they can register online for a free weight loss plan?

You Get What You Pay For Mentality

There is a saying, “You get what you pay for.”  I tend to be of that mindset.  People don’t like to work for free, so what happens is (at least when it comes to providing services) less than 100% effort is given to the project.  The quality of work usually ends up being poor.  But what about these free diets online?  Aren’t they just as good as their fee based membership competitors?  Yes, they are.   Let’s take a look at why free diet programs on line are just as good, if not better than fee based memberships online. 

An Offer They Can’t Refuse

Free diets online know that in order to attract dieters, they have to offer the same if not more than their competitors.  For starters, their websites need to be extremely attractive and inviting.  It’s easy to design your own professional looking website today with the same state-of-the-art software that major weight loss conglomerates use.  Once the site is aesthetically pleasing, the next part of the competition is web content.  Free diet plans online need to have a tag line, or a sales pitch.  They need to write compelling content to make dieters want to join.  In other words, they have to make them an offer they can’t refuse.

Look For These Highlights

If you’re going to go the free route, make sure they have the following:

Longevity – The plan they offer must be something they can live with and use for life.

Exercise Plan – The website must highlight an exercise program.  Any food plan that doesn’t include exercise is not helpful in the long run.  Studies show that people who maintain weight loss exercise regularly. 

Variety is the Spice of Life – A well balanced diet should include all food groups.  Any weight loss plan that bans whole groups of foods or is extremely restrictive calorically, is an unhealthy diet. 

Peer Support – A great online diet plan should have a forum where members can turn to each other for support.

Based on my review, most free online diet plans have all of the above bells and whistles – just like their competitors.  It also means their just as good as the big shots.

​UC and Cal State students are rightly pissed off at their schools’ incredible increases in tuition and fees and the virtual destruction of what was once the world’s finest public university system. At UCLA tuition has nearly tripled in 10 years. No wonder many have joined the Occupy movement.

L.A. private school USC is no land of 99 percenters, but the administration just announced that, thanks to a $ 3.8 million “gift,” as many as 40 students will be getting free rides in the next four years.

But wait, there’s more:

The donation by the Stamps Family Charitable Foundation will also create Penelope W. and E. Roe Stamps IV Leadership Scholars that will get $ 5,000 in pocket money — for “study abroad, unpaid internships, summer research or other learning opportunities,” according to a USC statement.

Good deal.

USC provost Elizabeth Garrett said the cash would enable “some of the brightest and most promising minds to attend USC, regardless of their financial circumstances.”

Scholarship hopefuls will have to be nominated by faculty or administrators. The new scholarships will bring the number of official academic “full rides” at USC to 180.

And, despite its “University of Spoiled Children” reputation, USC says that 60 percent of its undergraduates receive some kind of scholarship.

The other 40 percent? They either work three jobs or are the Real House Kids of Beverly Hills.
