One of the fascinating Angelenos featured in L.A. Weekly‘s People 2012 issue. Check out our entire People 2012 issue here.

Everywhere Denise Hunter goes, she’s mistaken for Michelle Obama.

“I was in San Francisco at a meeting,” she says, perched in a fine Sunday pantsuit on a couch in a back room of the First African Methodist Episcopal (FAME) Church in South Los Angeles. This office belongs to her husband, Rev. John Hunter, but her presence transforms it into the set of a spunky women’s talk show.

“And as I came out of the hotel and got into a cab,” she continues, “the cab driver freaked out, because he couldn’t figure out where my security was. So I had to calm him down and tell him, ‘No, that’s not who I am!’ ”

But she’s clearly tickled by the comparison.

Hunter has made various public appearances with Michelle Obama over the last two years, ever since FAME’s “first lady,” as her husband’s congregation calls her, was chosen to help lead Mrs. Obama’s national “Let’s Move” campaign for healthy living. And while the reverend came with her to the White House Christmas party last year, “I was the primary,” says his wife.

The couple’s public relationship is an intriguing mix of old-fashioned and modern. In his rousing sermons, Rev. Hunter makes ’50s-era cracks about their marriage. “Denise and I don’t always perceive things in the same way. Amen,” he tells a sea of fancy hats one Sunday in March. The punch line: “Sometimes she’s wrong!”

Yet there’s no mistaking that Denise Hunter is the star of this show. The crowd adores her. Throughout her husband’s sermon, titled “We Really Do Have Choices” (“He got that from me,” she says later), two big-screen TVs above the pulpit often zoom in on Hunter’s regal face in aisle two, as if she’s a celebrity at a Lakers game.

“I’m an oddball,” she says. “I don’t wear hats; I don’t play the piano; I don’t sing in the choir.”

Not once during a two-hour conversation with a reporter does she mention God.

The Hunters arrived in 2004 from Seattle, where Denise (who gives her age only as “40-plus”) got her start in nonprofit work. Now, just down the hill from their church, at a stately brick building on West Adams Boulevard, she runs FAME Corporations, an affiliated, nonprofit organization formed in the painful aftermath of the L.A. riots to plant seeds in the ashes.

While her husband has faced scrutiny for charging $ 122,000 in personal expenditures to the church credit card — and a lawsuit from a former FAME employee claiming she was forced into a sexual relationship with the reverend because it was “God’s will” — Hunter has become a darling of the Democratic Party. After helping run Kamala Harris’ campaign for state attorney general in 2010, Hunter hints she’s even been approached to run for office herself.

For now, though, she’s focused on Los Angeles. In one of her most controversial initiatives, Hunter has brushed aside the abstinence-only approach to tackle South L.A.’s chlamydia problem head-on — by running an STD-prevention campaign. Organizers hand out testing kits and hold sex education classes for young people.

“We know the kinds of things that are going on. Hormones are raging!” says the first lady of FAME. “So we have to move beyond what our tradition has been, and what our conservative views might be, and do something about this.”

I have to hand it to the Democrats at this point. Yes it could all be one huge coincidence but I don’t think it is. From the gate, the Democrats have had to do one thing and on thing only to win in November…Distract Mitt Romney from talking about the Economy!

The last thing the President, or the Democratic Party in general, wants to do is let Mitt Romney and the Republican party get into a groove by pounding them day in and day out on the economy. I am not going to get into whether Obama inherited a crappy economy or not and whether he has done the best job he could, doesn’t matter. The truth is that he doesn’t want to run a campaign that is focused on the economy.

At first it became fairly obvious that the Democrats were going to try to throw Romney off his game with a “War on Women”. While that argument may have resonated against Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich, against Romney it won’t hold water. Romney can take women’s issues and turn them right back to the economy.

Romney could turn the argument into “oh want free birth control? If you had a good job and made lots of money you wouldn’t care, and while we are at it how goes the economy? Are the jobs coming back yet?”

Then North Carolina voted!

Not content with a law that bans Gay Marriage that was already on the books. North Carolina needed a Constitutional Amendment banning the government from recognizing ANY union other than a traditional marriage between one man and one woman. The referendum in North Carolina came with the added little bows tied on top of all the typical right wing crazies coming out of the woodworks. One filed a YouTube video of himself shooting anti Amendment 1 signs with a shotgun. The wife of one State Senator who supported the Amendment told poll workers that Amendment 1 was necessary to save the Caucasian Race. The preachers kept their side of the bargain calling for parents to beat their children for acting feminine in any way for boys or the opposite for girls.

Here you go Mr President, Racism, Xenophopia, Homophobia, and Religious Extremism all wrapped into one beautiful package for you.

The President didn’t even need to be forceful, he didn’t need to articulate a policy vision he just needed to look directly into the camera and say exactly what he did say.

“At a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married”

Now the freaks are coming out against him and declaring a cultural war. Rush Limbaugh declared that President Obama wanted a War against Marriage. The Palin family, in all of their “baby out of wedlock ” flair, had Bristol Palin actually say,

“In this case, it would’ve been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that’s not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage. Or that – as great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids’ worldview.”

Really Bristol? Gays shouldn’t be able to get married because children do better in Male/Female homes? Are you serious? Are you not raising your child in a single parent home where you admit that the child’s father isn’t part of his life? Shame on you Bristol!

Anyway back to the election. The Democrats are doing a fantastic job of keeping the debate going on anything but the economy and why not? Why not point out that the Republican Party, while the country has really serious problems to solve is too busy worrying about gay people wanting to get married.

It is fairly obvious that this generations target for discrimination is definitely gay Americans, and Obama and team are confronting that reality heads on. Good policy does make good politics sometimes. This is one of those times.

Left and Right is a three times weekly column by Inquistr writer H. Scott English examining the hottest political issues of the day, the candidates running for public office and the 2012 elections.

She cannot handle any sugars whatsoever, and has to limit herself to VERY few carbs. With this being said, does any know, preferebly from experience, any good weightloss programs for diabetics? Something where the food can be ordered, such as NutriSystem, where you don’t have to go to the place to participate. Thanks in advanced~~! Links would be much appreciated,

Question by Tim: Do you think my English is good or bad?
I am a foreign exchanged student from Japan and I’ve only been studying English for about 5 months. So I was just wondering what do you think about this short essay I wrote for getting rid of acne scars?

“Take a cotton ball and squeeze a bit of lemon juice on it, then proceed to dab the cotton ball little by little on your acne scars. Do this daily, at least twice a day (once in the morning and once at night) and try not to expose your skin to sunlight too much. Try doing this for at least a month. You should see a small difference after 2-3 weeks if done properly. Now this is the most natural way to get rid of acne scars because lemon juice has a certain chemical of acid in it that burns everything it touches.

Otherwise, you could take the fast and easy route by going to the Dermatologist and undergo skin laser removal as this kind of procedure eliminates the top layer of your skin to remove (or reduce the appearance) of acne scars on your skin. But it is extremely costly though, around 5-10 thousands of dollars (depending on the Dermatologist) to get this procedure done. So if you have enough money to afford such an expensive procedure then feel free to do so, otherwise you could just take the easy route provided above.”

Is my English good or bad? I am still relatively new at the English language so please bare with me as I have a long ways to learn before I could be truly proficient in speaking and writing in English.
