Caryn Powers is one of those young adults who already benefits from the Health Care Reform Act. At 24 years old, she has Crohn’s Disease, an immune disorder that attacks the stomach and intestines. “It’s like having the stomach flu but its 100 times worse,” says Caryn, Her medicine alone costs more than 3000 dollar a month. If she couldn’t stay on her parents health insurance she says, she’d be bankrupt and unable to work as a nurse. “If I had to go off policy, I wouldn’t get the meds I need, wouldn’t be able to go to doc,”says Caryn. “I would be very sick.” The Obama Administration says 2.5 million young adults can now stay on their parent’s health plan up to age 26 thanks to the act. Congressman Henry Cuellar calls this an accomplishment because young adults are in the most likely age group not to have health insurance. “It meant that the coverage to those young folks in the nation went from 63 to about 74 percent in that category and that’s a big plus because they now will have health insurance,” said Cuellar. But as life saving as this was for Caryn, the young adult provision is not without limitations. Last year, the administration itself projected this one benefit alone could increase group health insurance premiums nationwide by up to 1.2 per cent. “In the state of Texas you have two insurance companies that really control the market,” said Cuellar. “So instead of having two insurance companies, we will have four or more. “When you have more insurance companies …

It is a simple fact that jails in the United States are overcrowded and people are falling through the cracks with either people being released who shouldn’t be or people that are constantly going in and out jail, people that shouldn’t be there.

University of South Carolina researcher Dana DeHart discovered this aspect of the problem when she was conducting a study looking into the backgrounds of women in jail. As DeHart noted in one case in particular she kept seeing the same woman cycling in and out of jail, a woman with mental health problems.

This was a woman that didn’t need to be in jail said DeHart but the jails are overburdened and not capable of dealing with mental illness. It’s a matter of not having enough staff or the programming to help them deal with the situation.

DeHart’s study looked at the data from 219 women that were incarcerated in both rural and urban jails and found that 55 percent of those women meet the criteria for lifetime PTSD, and that 60 percent have strong histories of drug and other substance addiction.

Additionally women who have been incarcerated show increased rates of serious mental illness when compared to women outside of jail. These illnesses include major depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and brief psychotic disorder.

“There are a lot of indications that people who are incarcerated have high rates of mental health issues, but few studies have examined the prevalence of serious mental illness among women in jails. Thus far, most studies have concentrated on prison and not jail,” said DeHart, one of the study’s co-investigators.

Prescription drug trends have been revealed that, while perhaps sobering, may not exactly be shocking to many Americans.

Use of psychiatric medications like antidepressants has skyrocketed in the past few years, with about one in five Americans reporting having used medications to treat a mental disorder. The study, done by pharmacy benefit manager Medco, included 2.5 million insured Americans from 2001 to 2010. Results indicated that 25% of women polled reported using such pharmaceuticals, with 20% of those relying on antidepressants.

More alarmingly, the rate of children on antipsychotic medications has increased sharply- use of the drugs, used to treat the most severe psychiatric conditions, doubled between 2001 and 2010, the study revealed. Use of ADHD medications among adult women was 2.5 times higher in 2010 than it was in 2001, and there was a large uptick in the use of “anti-anxiety medications, atypical antipsychotics and drugs to treat ADHD” in adults aged 20 to 44.

Researchers made some suggestions as to why mental health medications have become so heavily relied upon in the United States:

Said Dr. David Muzino of the Medco Neuroscience Therapeutic Research Center: “[W]hat is not clear is if more people — especially women — are actually developing psychological disorders that require treatment, or if they are more willing to seek out help and clinicians are better at diagnosing these conditions than they once were.”

But, he noted, it was a tough decade: the 9/11 attacks, two wars and a deep recession.

Determining the reasons behind the dramatic shift toward the use of drugs to treat mental health issues is the “next critical step” in research, scientists indicate.

Question by rabble rouser: Will the “mental health” section start to cheer up when we are no longer at war?
I scroll through the hundreds of questions about depression, and medications, and self-cutting and addiction and I have to wonder how much of it is karma from this terrible war.

I think on a subconsious level – people know that the media is not showing them just how ugly it all is…
I just recently saw some photos from the war and couldn’t believe my eyes…

Isn’t it time to start the healing process yet?

Best answer:

Answer by gadfly
The war has nothing to do with mental illness. Mental illness is a problem due to both biology and internal anxieties. If someone is clinically depressed any outside stimulus affects the persons mood very little.
